How does the snow melting system work?
  1. Sensors detect both low temperature and humidity,
  2. The control unit switches the system on.
  3. The self-regulating heating cable will start melting snow and create a flow path in the gutter or on the roof. It then assures the continuous flow of water into the drain and avoids ice or snow build-up or icicle formation.
  4. When the air temperature rises above set-point or moisture is lower than set-point, the system switches off.

The heating cable is deactivated when air temperature is very low (no melting) or when it rises above the set value, or when there is no moisture

Determining the cost of true winter safety with gutter heaters

Already in 1986, 300 m of GM-2X self-regulating gutter heat cable was installed at CKW Ruopigen in Switzerland. As well as guaranteeing roof and gutter deicing the client’s objective was to accurately determine the operating cost of the system .

The installation was divided in two systems, each with a different control method. Temperatures and power consumption were measured during 4 months:

  • one system sensed temperature only
  • the other one operated with temperature and moisture sensing
The result?

Electricity consumption dropped by 78% when the system was operated using temperature and moisture sensing , compared to temperature sensing only.
